UNIVERSAL JOINTS for CHEVROLET CARS
Select from the following list of universal joints (u-joints) for Chevrolet Cars from 1949 to current year production vehicles. Over the years Chevrolet u-joints (u joints) have been of two basic designs. One is the outside snap ring version and the second is the inside "C" clip version.
OUTSIDE SNAP RING STYLE: The OUTSIDE snap ring style is easily identified by the obvious snap ring that is located in a groove in the yoke at the outside edge of the universal joint bearing cap. Hence the term OUTSIDE Snap ring style or OUTSIDE locks. This snap ring requires pliers to squeeze the snap ring to install or remove it from the yoke. This snap ring centers the u-joint within the yoke ears. Typically found on 1310, 1330, 1350 universal joints.
INSIDE "C" CLIP STYLE: You can easily identify the INSIDE style GM 3R series because when you look at the yoke you see the end of the u-joint bearing cap and no squeezable snap ring is visible.
You will also see what appears to be two small "pins" on each side of the yoke ear that is really the capped off pastic and not really any sort of pin.
During the construction of the OEM 3R series driveshaft the factory injects plastic into two holes or "ports" on each yoke ear while holding the universal joint centered within the driveshaft. When the plastic cools it locks the u-joint in place.
If the universal joint is the original factory 3R series with the injected plastic locking it in place you will not see any "C" clip.
Once the original has been changed you will always find the "C" clip that locks it in place since we can longer can duplicate the injected plastic process. Hence the term INSIDE "C" clip style or INSIDE locks. With the INSIDE "C" clip style you may not readily see the "C" clip that is located on the inside edge of the yoke ear that locks into a circular groove in the u-joint cap. All 3R series replacement u-joints will have a groove in each bearing cap and come with 4 "C" clips that must be installed to center the u-joint correctly. Look carefully and you will find this "C" clip that locks the u-joint in place and centers the u-joint within the yoke.
You may also find that the plastic "pins" may have been melted away from heating the yoke in an attempt to soften the plastic to remove the original u-joint leaving two obvious small holes. These are the open injection ports. Once the bearing cap has been removed from the yoke you may also find the plastic has been totally melted away or removed from the channel inside the yoke ear and sometimes people confuse the remaining groove or channel as a "snap ring" groove and unfortunately mistake this yoke for the outside snap ring style.
It's easy to get the correct u-joint for your Chevy.

CHEVROLET CARS: The choices below are the replacement part numbers for those originally used on Chevrolet Cars except Corvette. See Corvette section below.
- If you have a Chevy Car DRIVESHAFT with OUTSIDE SNAP RINGS the u-joint dimensions should be 3.219 inches wide cap to cap - 1.062 bearing cap diameter...see choices below
- If you have a Chevy Car DRIVESHAFT with INSIDE "C" CLIPS the u-joint dimensions should be 2.556 inches wide between inside shoulders of yoke - 1.125 bearing cap diameter ... You have a 3R series driveshaft ...see choices below
- COMBINATION U-JOINTS may have been used at the rear end of some INSIDE "C" clip style OEM driveshafts. These were used to connect the inside "c" clip style 3R series driveshaft to a 1330 series rear end pinion yoke that has the locating tabs.
- ADDITIONAL COMBINATION U-JOINT ....If you have a need for a Combination u-joint to connect 1310 series parts to 3R series parts
- Greaseable - Combination of 5-153X and 5-3147X - (1310 series and 3R series)
CORVETTE: 1953 to 1996 Chevrolet Corvette.
